Frequently Asked Questions About "Specials"

Q - What is a Special?
A - A Special is a song performed by a small group during a concert.
Q - How many people are in a Special?
A - Solos are not permitted. Trios, quartets etc. are allowed. Duets may be allowed at the discretion of the Director, but are not encouraged. Most groups sound better with two singers on each part.
Q - Who can perform in a Special?
A - Any FTS member may perform. A member may participate in no more than two Specials during each concert.
Q - How do I become part of a group?
A - Groups are formed by individuals inviting others to sing with them. Often, an announcement is made at a rehearsal inviting anyone interested to stay after the rehearsal and form a group. The groups select songs and plan rehearsal times independent of the choir.
Q - How are songs selected?
A - Songs must follow the theme of the concert. It is a good idea for the group to select a leader. Then, songs are found that will fit the make-up of the group, and the group makes a selection. The Director must approve all song selections. The Director will need a copy of the music, not just the name of the song.
Q - How do I find a song?
A - J.W. Pepper has a large catalog of songs for each type of group (2-part, 3-part, SSA, SATB, etc.) Songs can be heard on-line or in person at the Fremont location. On-line web sites and local music stores also have choral music.

Q - Do I need to purchase the music for each group member?
A - Each member should have an original piece of music, unless it is not available.
Q - Can I work with an accompanist?
A - There is no specific accompanist assigned to work with the groups, and not all groups use piano accompaniment. If you want a piano, or other, accompaniment, you will have to make arrangements yourself. Some songs come with practice CDs or tapes, which can be purchased, or perhaps a group member can assist with the accompaniment. Prior to the auditions, give a copy of the music to the FTS accompanist to learn. Scheduling a session with her is also recommended, but may involve a fee - generally $30 - $40/hr. Try to arrange to rehearse with other groups at the same time in order to share the cost.
Q - How does a Special get selected to perform in a concert?
A - There is an audition process. About one month prior to the concert, three independent judges will listen to the groups and decide which ones qualify to perform. All members of the group must be at the audition and the two dress rehearsals. There is generally a limited number of Specials allowed for each concert, which could mean that only the very best groups are selected. Decisions are based on many factors, including presentation, energy and excitement, good harmonies and knowledge of the song. All decisions are final.
Q - What if my group isn't selected?
A - Not all groups will be selected, for various reasons. Understandably, it can be upsetting if your group is not chosen. Generally, the judges will give you good reasons for not being selected. Take the judges’ remarks as good advice, and try again next time. The experience of working with a small group is valuable, even if the results are disappointing.
