| Q - |
What is a Special?
|
| A - |
A Special is an additional song performed during the concert.
It does not involve the entire choir.
|
| Q - |
How many people are in a Special?
|
| A - |
Specials can range from solos to large ensembles.
Most ensembles sound better with two singers on each part.
|
| Q - |
Who may perform in a Special?
|
| A - |
Any FTS member may perform. A member may participate in no more than two
Specials during each concert.
|
| Q - |
How do I become part of a group?
|
| A - |
Groups are formed by individuals inviting others to sing with them. Often, an
announcement is made at a rehearsal inviting anyone interested to stay after
the rehearsal and form a group. The groups select songs and plan rehearsal
times independent of the choir.
|
| Q - |
How are songs selected?
|
| A - |
Songs must follow the theme of the concert.
It is a good idea for the group to select a leader.
Then, songs are found that will fit the make-up of the group, and the group
makes a selection.

| Q - |
How do I find a song?
|
| A - |
J.W. Pepper has a large catalog of songs, as do other on-line sites.
They also have a store in Dublin where you can browse through their
stacks and listen to music.
Local music stores also have solo and choral music.
Often, songs can be heard on-line at JWPepper.com.
Another good source is Sheetmusicplus.com.

| Q - |
Do I need to purchase the music for each group member?
|
| A - |
Each member should have an original piece of music, unless it is not available.
All music for Specials is the responsibility of the singer.
|
| Q - |
Can I work with an accompanist?
|
| A - |
If you want accompaniment for rehearsals, you will have to make arrangements
yourself. Some songs have practice CDs available for purchase, or perhaps a
group member can assist with the accompaniment. Prior to the auditions, give a
copy of the music to the FTS accompanist to learn. Scheduling a session with the
FTS accompanist is also recommended, but will involve a fee,,
generally $30 –
$40/hr. Try to arrange to rehearse with other groups at the same time in order to
share the cost.

| Q - |
How does a Special get selected to perform in a concert?
|
| A - |
There is an audition process. About one month prior to the concert, the other choir
members will listen to the groups and decide which ones the majority of the group
chooses to have perform. There is a limited number of Specials allowed for
each concert. Only the very best groups are selected. Decisions are based on
many factors, including presentation, energy and excitement, good harmonies,
appropriateness of the selection and knowledge of the song. It is recommended
that songs be memorized.
All members of the group must be at the audition, unless
there are extenuating circumstances. Also, any instrumentalists that you
plan to use need to perform at the audition as well.
Essentially, the performance should appear pretty close to what will
be presented at the concert.
All decisions are final.

| Q - |
What if my solo or group isn't selected?
|
| A - |
Not all Specials will be selected, for various reasons.
Understandably, it can be upsetting if you/your group is not chosen.
There is a good reason for not being selected so ask the director for
feedback and try again next time.
The experience is valuable even if your group is not selected this time.
